H1 speciality lubricants made by Klüber obtain Halal certificate
Klüber Lubrication successfully completed the Halal certification of 117 Klüber H1 lubricants in November 2009. This makes Klüber the supplier with the world's largest portfolio of H1 lubricants certified according to ISO 21469 that are also in compliance with Islamic food law.
Klüber's portfolio comprises greases, oils, pastes, waxes and bonded coatings for various applications in the food and beverage industry, for example for the lubrication of bearings, chains, gears, slideways, compressors, conveyors and pneumatic components. This includes products for specialised applications such as high temperature lubrication or dry lubrication in conveyors. Companies undertaking the Halal certification of their production plants can thus buy Halal lubricants for all their production processes from a single source.
The use of NSF H1 lubricants is required by law for applications in the food-processing industry where incidental contact with the food product cannot be excluded. Islamic food law makes a number of additional complex requirements that are not taken into account for H1 registration, e.g. the absence of alcohols, which may be used in lubricants as additives.
The Halal certification was preceded by a comprehensive audit including an inspection of the production installations as well as a review of the lubricant formulations. At Klüber in Munich, a total of 91 H1 lubricants were certified as Halal by the Islamic Food Council of Europe. Klüber Texas had another 26 lubricants Halal certified by the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America.
